When Is a Watermelon Ripe? Harvesting Tips for Sweet Success

Knowing when to harvest a watermelon can be tricky, but with the right signs, you can pick your fruit at peak sweetness. Typically, watermelons are ready for harvest about 80–90 days after planting, or 35–45 days after flowering. However, visual and physical cues are the best indicators of ripeness.

Start by checking the tendril nearest the fruit’s stem—when it turns brown and dries up, it’s a strong sign the watermelon is mature. Next, examine the ground spot, the area where the melon rests on the soil. A ripe watermelon will have a creamy yellow or buttery spot; if it’s still white or green, it likely needs more time.

The skin of a ripe watermelon also loses its gloss and appears duller. Gently thump the fruit—if it produces a deep, hollow sound, it's likely ready to harvest. A high-pitched or metallic sound usually means it's underripe.

Finally, check the shape and size. A uniformly round or oval watermelon that feels heavy for its size is another good sign of ripeness. Avoid harvesting too early, as watermelons do not continue to ripen once picked. With these simple tips, you’ll enjoy juicy, flavorful melons straight from your garden.
