Do community and gaming sites really need ongoing maintenance?

A lot of community-driven and gaming websites seem to run for years with minimal changes, which made me curious about long-term upkeep. Are wordpress maintenance packages actually necessary for sites that mainly host forums, blogs, or gaming content?

On one hand, regular updates, backups, and security checks sound important—especially with plugins and themes changing all the time. On the other hand, some site owners worry that constant maintenance might break existing features or disrupt the user experience.

For anyone managing a WordPress-based community or gaming site, how do you handle maintenance? Do you actively invest in it, or just fix things when they break? I’d love to hear what’s worked (or not worked) for you.
